Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for his famous character of Sherlock Holmes, who appeared in 56 short stories written by the author. In addition to being a successful author, Doyle earned his medical degree in ophthalmology. Aside from his medical and literary exploits, Doyle had a strong sense of justice which motivated him to personally investigate a closed case in which he found inconsistencies. His dedication and hard work led to the exoneration of two men accused of the horrific crimes and created the grounds for the establishment of the English Court of Criminal Appeals in 1907.
