Earned his commission in 1902 after graduating from Virginia Military Institute and served in the Philippines-American War. He served in World War I under General and Bro. John J. Pershing. He was instrumental in the planning and coordination of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive which contributed to the ultimate defeat of the Germans. On September 1st 1939, he took the office of Army Chief of Staff and served in that capacity until the end of WWII. During the war he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army (5-star). After the war Marshall served as both the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his plan to rebuild Europe, which was named after him.
