Served under Zachary Taylor as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army and then served as a Union General during the Civil War where he fought in many battles most notably, the Battle of Shiloh. After the war, he served in several important political posts including the U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire and later the Governor of the New Mexico Territory. As a writer is known for authoring Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
